Why Buyers Consider Floating Solar
Floating PV can reduce land competition and may benefit from a cooler operating environment, but moisture, corrosion, anchoring, cable routing and operations access add project-specific risk. Validate the energy model and environmental design with the project engineer rather than using global capacity figures as a procurement shortcut.
Why Water Cooling Matters
Solar panels lose ~0.3-0.4% efficiency per °C above 25°C. FPV systems operate 3-5°C cooler than ground-mount due to water convection cooling, producing 3-5% more energy annually. In hot climates this jumps to 8-10% boost. Combined with bifaciality from water reflection, FPV can generate 10-15% more energy per kW installed than equivalent ground-mount systems.
Floating Structure Types
Floating systems can use pontoon-based or membrane-based platforms, with anchoring selected for the water depth, shoreline, wind, waves, level variation and environmental constraints. Less suitable: saltwater (corrosion), fast-flowing rivers, water bodies with heavy recreational use, ecologically sensitive habitats. Typical project size: 500kW to 50MW for commercial FPV.
Installation and O&M
FPV installation and O&M require project-specific methods for shore assembly, towing, anchoring, cable routing, electrical protection, access, inspection, environmental monitoring and storm response. The responsible engineers and authorities must approve the design.
